Nature of Nome

FALL

Venture to Alaska’s tundra for fall colors, muskox and arctic wildlife

With the guidance of experienced naturalist and photographer, Dawn Wilson

An autumn photography tour on the tundra surrounding Nome, Alaska, is a journey into a world transformed by the season’s colorful magic of muskox in the fall colors. As reds, oranges and golds blanket the landscape in a stunning palette, the muskox – a unique animal reminiscent of the Stone Age – saunters across the rolling pingos and tussock looking for a mate. The stark contrasts between the deep blue sky and the vibrant tundra create a dramatic canvas, offering photographers unique hues of colors and textures for landscape images and a visual artistry for the muskox backdrop. Every corner of the region becomes a potential masterpiece, from the furry muskox set against the colorful landscape to the fox and owls hunting along the Bering Sea coast, you are sure to come home with exceptional memories and photos.

An adventure to Nome during early September aligns with the kaleidoscope of fall colors on the tundra while the muskox are battling for opportunities to mate. The tour is also aligned to catch grizzly bears in hyperphagia, migratory birds staging to begin their journey south, willow ptarmigan entering their winter-white plumage and blueberries covering every ridge.

Itinerary

Day One: We will arrive as a group on the same flight into Nome, check into the hotel, visit the grocery store for snacks and beverages, and then head out for our first evening excursion.

Day Two to Four: Although there are no roads that lead to Nome from the mainland of Alaska, there are three roads out of Nome to remote villages. We will explore one road each day, seeking out landscape and wildlife subjects for our cameras. Potential subjects include beavers, porcupine, snowshoe hares, moose, caribou, grizzly bears, red fox, willow ptarmigan, tundra swans, eider ducks and harbor seals.

Day Five: After checking out of our hotel, we will spend our last day in the Arctic tundra taking one more drive onto a road of the group’s choice. We will return to town for a late lunch before heading to the airport to say goodbye to the beauty of northern Alaska.
